Here are some ideas which you can do at home to improve your website & SEO during the lockdown

If you are like me, you have been housebound for over 3 weeks and staying at home can be driving you mad!

I have been trying to use this time wisely by improving my own websites as well as my client’s websites to get better rankings on Google and give a better user experience.

Here are different ways to improve your website & SEO that you can do at home that will help your business now as well as in the future (when we get back to some normality).

Your website now more than ever is going to be one of your main marketing tools for your business and it does not matter what industry you are in.

Your clients and potential clients are searching more than ever online and if your website is not doing its job (helping you to get new customers) then now is the time to fix that.

6 ways to improve your website while at home

Improve your homepage

More often than not, the homepage of your website is the most visited page of your whole website and it will be the user’s first impression of your business.

If you were going on a blind date, would you chuck on “this old thing” you found at the back of your closet? No, you would not, you would try on new outfits, iron it and take the wrinkles out.

Fact: 38% of users won’t go any further on your website if they find the content and layout unattractive

You don’t have to go and re-design your whole website to give a new and fresh look, update your images, change your call to actions (CTAs).

Give the users something new and fresh to look at when they land on your website.

Remove old content

You have the time to remove old and irrelevant content on your website eg:

  • Events
  • Products you no longer stock
  • Turn off promotions or competitions that have finished

Having something on your website that is no longer valid to a customer can be very frustrating to your website visitors and give then a bad user experience.

Update old content

You have a chance now to edit and update the content on your website (pages and blog posts). Give your website visitors new, exciting and up to date information on the products and services that you offer.

If you are blogging and topical posts (guides, tutorials, how-to posts etc) you can tweak and improve them with new techniques or information that will help your users even more.

This can give your users a better experience with your website and also improve your rankings on Google.

Update your Titles and Descriptions

A very important aspect of getting users from Google to click on your website link in the search results over your competitors.

Research what your competitors are saying in their titles and descriptions and improve to get more click to your website.

To edit and update your titles and descriptions for each page you will need to go to the SEO plugin when editing the page.

Improve your website’s navigation

A very big turn off for users is a cluttered website navigation menu, and it can and does scare users off your website. When a user is searching for information on a service or product, they want to be able to get the exact information with the least amount of clicks.

By presenting users with a clean, well-organised menu will help streamline their experience on your website and turn them into a fan and a customer of your business.

Incorporate Call to Actions (CTAs)

How you want your website visitors to engage with your business is determined on the call to actions you give them.

Fact: 70% of small businesses lack a CTA on their homepage

If you are looking for leads for your business you need to provide a form for them to complete.

If you want phone calls, you have to provide a Call Now button so users can quickly call you.

If the user is on your website and they have questions, provide a chat feature that they can communicate directly with you so they can ask questions and you can answer them right on your website.

A number of experts have predicted that SEO is going to be the leading marketing source post COVID-19. SEO does not have to be done by an SEO company only, you can do your bit to help improve rankings on Google.

Here are 5 simple techniques that you can be actioned during the lockdown.

Improve your website’s page loading speed

Your page loading time is important for a few reasons.

Firstly, if your website (Pages & Posts) load slowly, Google will recognise this and they will harm your organic rankings. Also, a slow website will directly impact the user experience for visitors which will affect the engagement with your business.

Research shows 40% of visitors will abandon websites if the page takes longer than 3 seconds to load. What’s even more shocking is that 80% of those visitors won’t return to that website.

This is terrible for your SEO ranking because it ultimately kills traffic to your site.

Google’s algorithm recognises your website’s popularity and adjusts your search ranking accordingly.

Produce high-quality content

How often do you update your website? If you haven’t touched it since the day you built it, you probably don’t have a great SEO ranking right now but you can change that.

To drive more traffic to your website and increase its popularity, you need to give visitors a reason to keep coming back.

Create new pages or posts with high quality, recent, and relevant content that your website visitors will enjoy reading and engaging with.

Another one of Google’s ranking factors is “dwell time”. This is the number of time people stay on your website per visit.

If your site has fresh, exciting, or newsworthy information, it will keep visitors on your page longer and improve your dwell time.

Websites that provide highly informative content typically have long dwell times.

Optimise your images

Pictures and other images turn a very dull website into an eye-catching website that will entice website visitors to become a customer of your business.

But for these images to help your website with SEO, they need to be optimised properly.

And when I refer to optimising your images, I am referring to file format and the image size. Huge images can slow your website load time which will give a bad user experience and also hurt your rankings in Google.

You will need to resize your images and then compress them so they load fast on your website.

Renaming your images will help with SEO if you do it properly (you can sneak in keywords into the name of the image).

For example: If you are selling holidays, instead of naming your image “victoria falls1” you could name it “holiday packages in Victoria Falls Zimbabwe.”

When you are adding the image to your website, you MUST add the image title and caption (ALT Text), you can also add keywords. This will hello with the SEO of your page/website.

WordPress image compression plugins

The above plugins can be used on your WordPress website once you have uploaded your resized images.

Use outbound links

There are certain things you can do on your website that will increase the credibility of your website.

Sure, you can make claims stating that you are the best and so much better if you can back the statement with facts and figures.

All the claims you make on your website should be back and the best way to do that is by linking to trustworthy and authority websites.

As you can see from this post, I have been linking to 3rd party websites myself.

You should not only link to authority websites but also make sure it is the most up to date information on the internet.

You should also use internal links. These links will direct your website users to other pages on your website that are relevant.

Add more than text

The content on your website shouldn’t be only written words. As I mentioned earlier, pictures are great too, but there’s more you can add to improve your SEO ranking.

Consider adding other multimedia elements such as videos, slideshows, or audio to your site.

All of this can help improve the user experience.

It’s much easier to watch something than read about it and it takes much less time.

There is a direct correlation between multiple media on a web page and the rankings in Google.

By adding a variety of different media types, you will directly increase the amount of time a user will spend on your website.

Depending on the length of the video, text, images etc your readers could spend several minutes of each page of your website.

If this happens, it will definitely increase your rankings on Google.



COVID 19 is here and I personally think it will stay with us for quite some time, we are just going to deal with it in our normal lives.
